Intel Sells NAND Fab, SSD Business to SK hynix for $9 Billion

Today, SK hynix issued a press release stating that it has signed an agreement to buy Intel's NAND memory and storage business. The sale includes Intel's SSD business, NAND IP, and wafer production, all for a tidy sum of USD 9 billion - but it comes in the form of two payments. The sale includes Intel's Dalin fab in China, but the deal's final step won't complete until March 2025. In the meantime, Intel will still manufacture NAND wafers at the Dalian facility.

Interesting, looks like they are not happy with the market volatility in the NAND space, which I get. I knew they would hold onto the Optane IP though considering that is their baby in particular. $9 Billion, nice tidy sum.

Kinda crazy that SSDs have gotten so cheap intel doesn't even want to sell them. 

 

I actually have a couple spare SSDs in not even using at this point, left over from customers upgrades.

But it's so EMBARRASSING for them to have to ask amd users to test.... ROTFL anyone else remember last jan when they were looking for pcie 4.0 testers for optane? they had to ask amd users. ;)

Yeah that was like kicking a man while he is already down. I reckon they will plow some of those new funds into getting 7nm sorted....or some process smaller than 14nm lol. That and pushing their new GPU department. HOWEVER is is never as simple as getting a load of cash and dumping it into certain areas, so who knows what Intel will focus on primarily now they have gotten rid of NAND. If I were them I would be hurrying to compete with AMD in the CPU realm otherwise if they continue to stagnate for too long, AMD will just run away with it.
